The first reproductive consultation is the first contact that patients have with the assisted reproduction clinic, the doctor and the referent coordinator.
What is the purpose of the first fertility visit?
Before the first fertility consultation, the first thing patients are asked to do when they make their appointment is to fill in some basic information about their medical history in the self-anamnesis (medical and family history, lifestyle, medications, etc.).
The anamnesis facilitates the evaluation of the case before the first visit to the fertility clinic. Once in the clinic, the patient will be able to explain to the gynecologist the reason for coming to this appointment. This is the time to explain everything that we believe is important for the fertility assessment, as well as to provide evidence or documents from previous treatments. The doctor will be in charge of compiling all this information and will request the tests that he/she believes are necessary.
Basic fertility study
The basic fertility study consists of a series of tests that are routinely requested during this first visit. In the case of women, these tests are usually a complete blood test with hemogram, blood group, serology, thyroid study, as well as a hormonal study (carried out between the 2nd and 4th day of the cycle) and the anti-mullerian hormone (essential to know the ovarian reserve).
In the case of the male, apart from a blood test with serology, blood group and in some cases, karyotype, the main male fertility test is the sperm analysis. Sperm analysis can be used to assess reproductive possibilities based on the number, mobility, and morphology of the spermatozoa.
Request for tests
In most cases it is recommended that the woman undergo a karyotype (study of the chromosomes in the blood), but this will depend on each specific case. An ultrasound scan is also necessary to assess the uterus and ovaries, as well as to count the antral follicles.
Another test that is sometimes requested is a hysterosalpingogram, known as a tubal test.
Ginemed currently offers its patients a package of tests for both women and men which allow for an exhaustive study of their fertility.
Explanation of reproductive options
With all this, the next visit is scheduled for a case study with all the results and individualized treatment advice, as well as an explanation of the patient's reproductive options. There are many options that reproductive medicine offers to patients with fertility problems, from artificial insemination (AI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), eggdonation, double donation, ...
